Captain Ham's Tools of the Trade : Utensils
|
I will admit, I have spent some time working in a professional kitchen. Utensils
can make cooking a joy or a chore. I'd prefer it to be a joy. Since you're away from
home, you will want to keep your arsenal to a minimum. Here's my suggestions for the
selection : a turner (I still call it a spatula) and a pair of tongs. That's it. You
May prefer a fork it you're cooking some larger steaks, but I'm fine with tongs for
that. Here's what's available.

Turners (Spatulas)
|

These three would be my choice for this category. These three items are available from
Kitchen Etc. (an excellent store) You can
check out that link to find one in your area. My choice would be the OXO Good Grips
BBQ Turner, which is excellently stiff, long enough to keep you away from flare-ups
and has a serrated edge excellent for scoring hot dogs or slicing rolls. Second would
be the OXO Good Grips Turner which is not as long and has no serrated edge. Third is
the American Cooks 18/8 Stainless Steel Turner which seems very similar to units
available elsewhere. I also found some utensils at Stop & Shop (a supermarket chain) and
Wal-Mart.

Tongs and Forks
|
I ran into a wonderful product while doing some research for this section, the OXO
Good Grips Tongs. I'm a tong man, sometimes using them when I should probably
be using my turner, and these are some NICE tongs. If I had been carrying my wallet
at the time (I just had the digital camera and some paper) they would be mine right
now. Highly, highly recommended. They even have non-slip rubber grips.
